Background Information
Source Radio started its life as 'Phoenix Student radio', a project initiated by a past student of Coventry University. Aquired by CUSU in 2001, it became Source FM as part of the Source Student Media Brand. During this time several short-term broadcasts took place across the city on FM.
In 2006 the station was re-born again as Source Radio, as we moved to a full-time AM license which became a reality on March 5th 2007.
Potential Audiences
There are approximately 17,000 students who attend Coventry University and around 3,000 staff employed. The majority of students are undergraduates studying for their first degrees and the average age group is from 18 to 24 years. There is a very even balance between male and female students here and the University also supports a very large international student population. The reach of our AM signal is up to 15 miles, which encompasses all University buildings, Coventry City Centre, local schools & colleges and areas with a high student population &/or orientation.
This means that roughly 30,000 students will be within the range and approximately 50,000 16 - 30 year olds. There is of course along with the rest of the Coventry population within the suburbs which is currently around 300,000 people!
Increase in Exposure
We were the first radio station to broadcast 'Flirt' on a Friday night at Coventry University's ''Fifty Four' venue. Flirt is a nationwide event in many different universities.
Who can join?
Anyone (aslong as you are/were a student!) We are a society within Coventry University Students' Union (CUSU) run entirely by student volunteers. All we require is that you are a student or ex-student of Coventry University. You need a CUSU lifetime membership card if you are an ex-student. You then need to pay a small membership fee to obtain your own Source Radio membership card. From there on, The opportunites are endless! You can become involved in the all areas of the station, ranging from the review of new music or production of funky sounding jingles to presenting your own show or reading the news.
Areas you may want to get involved in:
Our offices are open for most the week in order for people to present shows and use our computers for other radio related work. If you want to meet existing members, visit us when it suits you. We are based within the basement of the Priory Street Students' Union building in an area called 'The Junction'. We have an official meeting once a week on a Tuesday evening from 6pm . We also schedule additional social events for other days of the week. Please come along to our meeting on Tuesday and meet everyone else who shares your enthusiasm for student radio.
What else do you need to know?
We also have an online forum where you can post comments and read up on news within Source Radio. We also regularly post opportunities on there that often involve offers of work experience within other local radio stations and DJ work in '54', Coventry 's premier student venue.
Our usual procedure for new members is to assess their experience and then decide what training is needed and their initial role in their chosen department(s). If you wish to go on air, the most common pattern a new presenter would follow is to start with reading the news or working as a co-presenter. If you are able to bring an audio demo of your radio work, it would be very helpful.
